History of Mathematics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2
History of Mathematics - Essay Example Although there was no record of any mathematical talent in his family, both Galoisââ¬â¢s parents were intelligent and well-read in subjects considered important at the time: philosophy, classical literature and religion. In October 1823, Galois was enrolled at the Lycee of Louis-le-Grand and his initial years in school were marked with many successes and several prizes. During his first term, however, there was a rebellion by forty students who were all expelled. Although Galois was not involved in the rebellion, the severe attitude taken by the school against those students left an impression on his already developing political outlook. By his third year, he became bored with the classical studies and his interests were soon absorbed by Legrendreââ¬â¢s Geometry, a book understood by very few. He regularly failed his exams and was asked to repeat the year due to poor work in rhetoric. He faced severe criticisms from his rhetoric teachers and soon his own family started to think of him as strange. February 1827 marked a turning point in his life, as he entered his very first mathematics course, taken by M. Vernier. Typical reports from his school described him as bizarre, singular, original and closed. His passion for mathematics dominated him and his director of studies advised his parents to let him concentrate only on mathematics and forgo all others. His time in school apart from mathematics was described as a waste of time ââ¬Å"as he did nothing more than torment his teachers and overwhelm himself with punishmentsâ⬠. However, M. Vernier reported him as an intelligent student with zeal and success (Rothman, 1982). M. Vernier constantly implored Galois to work more systematically, an advice which he ignored. Galois attempted the entrance examination to Ecole Polytechnique a year early and without the required course in mathematics. His failure to clear the exam and the subsequent failures left a deep gash on him and embittered him for life

Cubism -the Weeping Woman Essay Example for Free
Cubism -the Weeping Woman Essay Cubism was an art movement which originated in France and Spain in 1906. Cubism influenced painting movement. Cubist artists include Pablo Picasso, George Braque and Juan Gris. Picasso had recently travelled to Africa and native America and was inspired by the tribal masks. Cubist Artists captured different view points at the same time. This showed collage and made the image look 3D. In the painting ââ¬ËThe Weeping Womanââ¬â¢ she looks like she is at home. I get this idea from the border behind her in the middle of what looks like two walls. I also think it looks homely because it is painted yellow, a colour associated with warmth and comfort. It could also be a church, the brown strip could symbolise the wooden seats in a church. Another thing it could symbolise, is the attendance of a funeral because she is wearing black coloured clothing. In the middle of her face, which is the colour white/blue, it could mean a part of her being taken away, not only is her colour draining away, but so are her emotions. She seems to be hiding her sadness. You can tell she is sad and upset because her eyes look glazed over and there is a red/pink blush under her eyes and nose which could show that she has been crying and has wiped her tears away. The sharp jagged lines could represent how she is holding herself together, and maybe the other emotions she feels, like anger. You can see that she is in distress as she has creases on her forehead. The bits of green blended in with the yellow could represent jealousy, but could also symbolise being ill or sick. She is so upset that its actually making her feel weak and unwell. The white could also be seen as being some kind of ghostly figure, which links back to the thought of her attending a funeral, and why she is so upset. The green representing jealousy, could be envy for other people whoââ¬â¢s loved ones are still with them. Her hands look like they are together, like she is trying to pray, for the protection of her loved one in the afterlife. She could also be holding something, like a tissue to wipe away her tears, a possession of the bereaved, a letter or a will. This painting was actually painted representing the weeping woman as a mother of a soldier who had died at war. This connects to the thing she could be holding, as when a soldier dies at war, they usually send a letter to inform the close family of this.

A Nuclear Waste Race: Perspectives on Reprocessing Spent Fuel Essay
ââ¬Å"It isnââ¬â¢t easy being greenâ⬠ââ¬â Kermit the Frog. Even though Kermit was referring to the color of his skin, this is also vindictive of todayââ¬â¢s mindset in thinking green trying to merge the environment into our everyday lives. Nuclear power first hit the scene as an alternative to burning fossil fuels and emissions of toxic carbons released into the atmosphere as waste products. But, the general publicââ¬â¢s first glimpse of the awesomeness of nuclear energy was in the form of a highly effective and destructive weapon, therefore giving a distinct aura around the possibilities of nuclear development. Nuclear power had been operational and seemingly unscathed for almost fifty years, prior to the events that occurred in the late 1970ââ¬â¢s. The vast political and social debates surrounding the alternative energy source arose from three major events in history. First was the release of the movie, ââ¬Å"The China Syndrome.â⬠This film is rendered as one of the most politically correct movies published about nuclear power. Movie critic Damien Cannon proposes, ââ¬Å"How many films are so accurate that, even though they're fictional, they could easily be documentaries? Schindler's List is one. The China Syndrome is another. In this case we see the greatest fears of the Nimby culture unearthed when a nuclear power station almost goes out of control and the men-in-suits cover it up.â⬠Secondly, only three weeks after the premier of ââ¬Å"The China Syndromeâ⬠, the meltdown of the number two plant on Three Mile Island occurred. This spiked interest in the recently rele ased movie, and encouraged hysterical reactions to the progression of nuclear power. The American public had witnessed a recent unimaginable fear essentially come to life. Finally, the most notable and ... ...reat Illusion of Nuclear Energy.â⬠Greenpeace.org. Stereotypes: Race and People
Can everything said these days be believed? Todayââ¬â¢s social media is highly affected by both language and how a message is sent whilst using the language. There are a handful of different aspects that affect social media as a whole; popular culture, stereotypes, textual bias and language presented in speeches and campaigns. Language can be used to explain a message but how the language is used in a context can define whether or not the message is portrayed clearly or if it is portrayed poorly. What you are about to hear may affect how you interpret language used by todayââ¬â¢s media as well as todayââ¬â¢s society. If you donââ¬â¢t know what it is let me explain for a bit: Stereotyping is the act of presenting a person or group in a certain way, through simplified and biased media, for example all asians like rice. This phrase states that the whole asian population, wherever in the world they may be, like rice. For an asian like myself I would think: ââ¬Å" oh that isnà ¢â¬â¢t exactly true since asian are also people who have different like and dislikesâ⬠. Now this is where stereotyping causes harm between different ethnic groups, for example the the phrase; ââ¬Å"all black people steal thingsâ⬠.This phrase clearly states that all African and African American people like to steal things and this phrase was made up because of the fact that maybe once or twice in history a man dressed in black or an African American or African man was accused of stealing something therefore this stereotype is supposedly applicable towards the whole black population around the world. As one might see stereotyping can cause great disputes between different ethnicities as well as break ties between specific ones. Stereotyping is very popular social media ( tv shows, news, internet, etc. ).How the news dictates a certain story about an ethnic can in turn either make create trust between people or start wars between them. For example, not everyone who is Musl im wants to bomb gigantic pieces of architecture but due to certain events, such as the bombing of the twin towers of the world trade center on September 11, 2011, people have come to believe that all Muslims have bad intentions. How we interpret the news may affect social relations between the people we know. What have I learned from the constant language change and all these messages from different cultures, world leaders, and speeches?Well one thing is that: * What we say always has a hidden meaning. There is never a message without a hidden meaning to itself. * Secondly, people will never forget what you will say, meaning you must be very careful with the words you use and in what manner you say your message because it can be misunderstood. * Finally, always remember that the freedom of speech does not mean that one is free to say whatever they please but to convey their opinions by talking to one another. * Kiko Garcia Comments: XXkikomysterXX says:I totally I agree with what y ouââ¬â¢re saying, I mean people shouldnââ¬â¢t be judge from what has been stereotyped against them. I mean Iââ¬â¢m asian, but I donââ¬â¢t like rice that much. I have had a stranger come up to me one time and asked me if I knew kung-fu or any kind of martial art, I told him that I didnââ¬â¢t and he just simply said: ââ¬Å"well I thought all Asians were good at some kind of martial artâ⬠. This insulted me a bit in the sense that some stereotypes make other people believe that Asians are being expected of something great. Kikoman345 says:Tss you guys are a bunch of little girls! Why would you take something like ââ¬Å"oh you should be good at mathsâ⬠so seriously, I mean Iââ¬â¢m asian Iââ¬â¢m not good at math but I donââ¬â¢t complain about what other people think about me. I only think about myself and what would benefit me. Kikodaman says: Kikoman345, I kinda I agree with you in the sense of self importance but at the same time itââ¬â¢s also quit e good to understand why stereotyping starts in the first place, itââ¬â¢s because of other people from another ethnicities donââ¬â¢t know the culture other than their own.I see the importance in this and I believe that if people from other ethnicities would be more open to other cultures they would come to understand the values and morals of that certain ethnic group. Kiko Garcia: Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts, a bit odd how we all have almost the same name though, but anyway I agree with you all. I understand that everyone is a different person but some people canââ¬â¢t be forced into understanding another culture just because of one certain stereotype but for other people they donââ¬â¢t really mind finding out about a new culture to them, which I find very good.Yet, as kikodaman said it is also important that the individual that are being stereotype only think about the good stereotypes that they hear, but at the same time being an open person would never hu rt anyone at all. Rationale: I wanted to show my knowledge in stereotyping but be able to explain it in a more popular way for todayââ¬â¢s culture, therefore I thought about writing a blog entry. In this entry I explain what stereotyping is and how it affects people, as seen in the ââ¬Å"commentsâ⬠. I thought about how news gets spread around us quite fast and then I thought why, the answer was the internet. The internet is used very frequently for communication, work, games, etc. but most importantly to spread news. My aim for this blog entry was to enlighten those who stereotype other people for their skin color, accent or even their ethnicity, and those who are less informed today are the young teenagers. These teenagers spend a handful of time on social media sites such as facebook, twitter, etc. so I thought writing a blog entry would make them understand more about stereotyping and its consequences.

Tourism in Nepal
Nepal is one of the most desired tourist destination of all time. Due to these cultural norms and values, Nepal is a most profitable destination for tourism industry. Annually, the visitors arriving in Nepal have their varied purposes and they are almost always enthusiastic about spending their holidays in Nepalââ¬â¢s touristic sites and they have to be encouraged to do so through extensive marketing efforts by Nepal Tourism Board.Furthermore, Nepalââ¬â¢s traditional cultural values can also be used for the poverty alleviation thorough eco-tourism, religious tourism and destination tourism and this has been included in the tourism marketing strategy of NTB. At present, apart from the obvious problem of negative media coverage, Nepal seriously lacks credible market research as to why exactly its tourism industry is under-performing and what aspects of product need attention.Inappropriate marketing expenses that are hard to track on the result on productivity could be being made and they need to be eliminated to attract appropriate techniques for the marketing. Regular surveys of departing visitors are not undertaken, so the country cannot gauge their levels of satisfaction, unsatisfied wants, spending or current propensity to return. Information on potential and in existing markets is only beginning to be gathered and marketing partnerships with the travel trade in these markets are lacking. However, some small attempts have been taken by the NTB and other concerned private sectors about the research on tourism industry of Nepal which is not a sufficient attempt in this business. Tourism is a traditional activity of the human being that is related with the traveling and it is naturally a human character. People desire change and travel provides the pleasure and leisure. Tourism is the movement of people from one place to another for the purpose of getting satisfaction. The most important assets of a country are cultural norms and values that reflect peopleâ â¬â¢s social pattern that can be used for tourism industry in Nepal. The main objective of this project report is to analyze and discuss about the strategy of Nepal for tourism marketing promotion. FoH/TU guidelines are followed to complete this report. Some methodologies such as survey, collecting relevant data, comparative studies and analysis are used and recommendations are presented as need of FoH/TU.
